Democrats Urge Trump to Remove Homeland Security Secretary Noem
"Kristi Noem should be fired immediately, or we will commence impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives," said Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Chair Pete Aguilar in a joint statement. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
Noem has come under scrutiny following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti on Saturday in Minnesota, prompting several Democrats to back an impeachment resolution against her.
Democratic leaders argued that taxpayer funds “are being weaponized” by the Trump administration to harm Americans, adding that "The violence unleashed on the American people by the Department of Homeland Security must end forthwith."
Earlier Tuesday, Trump dismissed speculation that Noem might resign amid backlash over the Minneapolis incidents. "No," he told reporters before traveling to Iowa when asked about her departure. He defended her performance, saying she is doing "a very good job."
Trump also highlighted the state of border security, noting, "The border is totally secure. You forget, we had a border that I inherited where millions of people were coming through. Now, we have a border where no one is coming through."
Noem is scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 3.
